In Reggio Emilia (Italy), the local utility company has decided to invest 75 million euros in a very large and state-of-the-art plant for producing biogas from organic waste.

The original plan to use the plant to power the city's entire public transport system had to be abandoned due to the decision to switch to electric power during construction. New EU regulations and expiring subsidies were decisive factors. The planning uncertainty resulted in enormous financial problems for the utility company.

The plant covers a considerable area of ​​approximately 17 hectares of land. The surface was completely sealed. Tens oft thousands of tons of concrete were used in its construction.

The biogas plant is very controversial among the population.

I had the opportunity to follow the construction until its commissioning. The ambivalence between green progress and the unreal, actually hostile nature of the environment preoccupied me throughout the entire period.

In Reggio Emilia (Italien) haben die örtlichen Stadtwerke entschieden, 75 Millionen Euro in eine sehr große und hochmoderne Anlage zur Gewinnung von Biogas aus organischen Abfällen zu investieren.

Der ursprüngliche Plan, damit den gesamten öffentlichen Verkehr der Stadt zu betreiben, musste auf Grund der während des Baus beschlossenen Umstellung auf Elektrobetrieb verworfen werden. Neue EU-Regeln und auslaufende Förderungen waren ausschlaggebend. Die Planungsunsicherheit hatte enorme finanzielle Probleme der Stadtwerke zur Folge.

Die Anlage bedeckt die beachtliche Fläche von ca. 17 Hektar Land. Die Oberfläche wurde komplett versiegelt. Zum Bau wurden zehntausende Tonnen von Beton verwendet.

Die Biogasanlage ist in der Bevölkerung sehr umstritten.

Ich hatte die Gelegenheit, den Bau bis zur Inbetriebnahme zu verfolgen. Die Ambivalenz von grünem Fortschritt und unwirklichem, eigentlich lebensfeindlichem Charakter des Ambientes hat mich über den gesamten Zeitraum beschäftigt.
